Thomas F. (Chip) Lewis III
Chip is a second generation Jones Obenchain attorney, following his father Thomas F. Lewis, Jr. into the firm in 1996. The opportunity to work together with his father for several years remains one of the most gratifying times of his legal career.
After practicing in the area of municipal securities for nine years, Chip has focused on representing locally owned businesses since his return to South Bend. This corporate and transactional practice has led to handling matters involving contract review and negotiation, finance, real estate, employment, succession planning and ownership disputes. After studying business and entrepreneurship as an undergraduate, he enjoys working with people who own their own business and must make an ongoing commitment to the success of their companies. Chip strives to match that commitment in providing legal services to his business clients.
As a South Bend native, Chip is committed to working for the benefit of the community. After graduating from the Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership South Bend/Mishawaka program in 1997, he served on its board of directors for seven years, including a year as president of the board. The Leadership program introduced him to issues of downtown redevelopment, and led him to co-found Downtown South Bend, Inc., which has been instrumental in the substantial development and improvement of the downtown area. He recently completed a two-year term as president of the DTSB board of directors, and continues to be a participating volunteer for the board.
In 1998, South Bend Mayor Steve Luecke asked Chip to serve the community as a member of the South Bend Public Transportation Corporation, better known as Transpo. He is now in his third four-year term as a director, currently serving as chair of its board of directors, and has participated in the emergence of Transpo as one of the top municipal transportation systems in its peer group. Chip has become a regular speaker on transit issues for board members at conferences of the American Public Transportation Corporation.
In addition to these activities, Chip has served or is serving one or more terms on the boards of directors of the South Bend Civic Theater, Madison Center, Inc., the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association, the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, the Rotary Club of South Bend, the Building Owners and Managers Association, the Chamber of Commerce of St. Joseph County, the Convention and Visitors Bureau Football Weekend Visitors Committee, the Indiana University Alumni Association of St. Joseph County, and the Parish Pastoral Council of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He has also enjoyed coaching the girls soccer team at St. Joseph School, especially in 2006 and through 2008 when the girls played their way to a three-peat of Inter-City Catholic League championships.
Chip and his wife Ana Maria have been married for fifteen years and they have three children, Madeline (age 14), Tommy (age 11) and John Paul (age 8). They really enjoy living in South Bend for all of the sporting, artistic and civic amenities available to families in the community.
